Keep your LinkedIn profile up-to-date

Whether you are actively on the hunt for a job or just weighing different options for your future, you should keep your LinkedIn profile updated all the time. You want a recruiter to be able to stumble on your profile at any given time and know what you’re all about.

This means updating your skills, job experience, and including recommendations. Look at your summary and evaluate if it has a relevant selling point. If not, bring it up a notch to make yourself look like a better candidate. Focus on the accomplishments you have achieved in job positions, not just on the tasks. Tasks can be reflected in keywords, recommendations, and position descriptions. Use your achievements to boost your profile.

A new LinkedIn profile picture also never hurt anyone. Your name, photo, and headline will show up in LinkedIn searches, so make it count! The Muse recommends using a photo that is “professional and expresses your brand.” For your headline, try to think of it as your selling point, or your elevator pitch.

You can also target updates to your profile with LinkedIn’s SEO in mind — keep reading to find out how.

Stay active on LinkedIn

LinkedIn offers plenty of ways to put yourself out there and to attract recruiters, it’s important to maintain an active LinkedIn account. This means reposting or liking relevant articles on your feed, or writing and publishing your own articles to showcase your expertise. If you’re publishing your own articles, you are also helping expand your reach if others are sharing it with their own networks.

Just as you would stay active on Instagram and Twitter — keep networking on LinkedIn. Spend a couple of minutes liking and commenting on articles on your home feed, and see if there are any new connections you can make.

Post your professional achievements and interests. For example, if you have the opportunity to attend a seminar, create your own write-up on it, and share what you’ve learned. Don’t be afraid to tag those involved with the seminar in case they feel inclined to share your post and extend its reach. Try to never miss the opportunity to get your voice out there, and hopefully, have it reach a recruiter on LinkedIn.

Help yourself show up in searches

When your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, you’re more likely to end up being found in a LinkedIn search by a recruiter. Use LinkedIn’s SEO to your advantage.

Have a specific job position in mind? When building your profile, keep keywords that recruiters and companies are more likely to search for when looking for job applicants. If you already have an ideal job position in mind, make sure to put in applicable keywords associated with that job position in your profile. This way, you look like a more suitable candidate to recruiters when they find you in LinkedIn searches.

Not sure where to start? Check out job listings that you would ideally apply for, get inspiration from the keywords associated with the job listing. The more specific you are when it comes to keywords and job descriptions, the better. Recruiters will want to search and narrow down the candidates they have to sift through, and highly-specific keywords help them do so.

A profile fully equipped with recommendations and endorsements is even more likely to rank higher in LinkedIn’s search engine. This doesn’t mean asking just about anyone you’ve ever worked with for a recommendation or endorsement, but people who know your work well. Ask someone that you’ve worked closely with that can vouch for your hustle and growth in certain positions.

You also want to bulk up your network with relevant connections. While your connections aren’t personally recommending or endorsing you for a job, their connection to you can help bring you one rank higher in a recruiter’s LinkedIn search. LinkedIn’s algorithm is more likely to chose recruiters results who are more closely connected to the recruiter.

While your job search can feel grueling at times, LinkedIn can help make the hunt easier. Keep these tips in mind to help attract recruiters to your LinkedIn profile.
