5 Ways to Ensure a Positive Employee Experience

By Kailey Walters on February 29, 2020

When you’re managing a number of employees, you probably often think about how you can be an effective manager, leader, and recruiter. While there are many ways to go about leading well, a key part of it is ensuring that your employees have a positive experience while they’re working under your management. This is important because happy, satisfied employees translate into productive employees who will see the value in their work and want to continue to contribute to the company.

Understandably, different employees often have different preferences and ideas for what constitutes a “positive” experience at work. However, there are a few things you can do to establish a culture of positive employee experiences at your company.

1. Promote work-life balance.

Ingrained in many corporate company cultures is the idea that employees need to be working all the time in order to be productive. This is certainly not always true — many people tend to be more productive and efficient with their work when they have the chance to rest and take breaks. After all, an office full of burned-out workers wouldn’t be good for anyone. Instead, promote a healthy work-life balance in your company so that employees have the opportunity to recharge when they’re not at work and won’t be afraid of being penalized for resting. Encouraging work-life balance is also crucial for showing that the company hears their employees’ concerns and cares about their personal lives outside of work. If employees feel heard and cared for by their company, they will most likely be more willing and able to produce high-quality work on a regular basis.

2. Improve benefits and compensation.

A huge factor that’s important in ensuring a positive employee experience is offering better benefits and compensation. Pay might not be everything, but it’s certainly a significant part of what employees value in any job they have. If your company does not offer fair compensation, or lower than average compensation, that might cause your employees to be dissatisfied and could ultimately drive employees away. To prevent this, make it clear to employees what kind of salary they can expect so that they at least have an idea from the beginning and feel they are being treated fairly and with transparency right away.

It’s also important to offer benefits that your employees want. Take the time to listen to what they say they value and take initiative to reasonably implement these changes. While not everything will be feasible, there are a number of possible benefits you could offer — such as flexible and remote work options — that are likely to make your employees happier and more productive.

3. Make administrative processes easier to handle.

Sometimes, it’s the simple things that can make a huge difference. In this case, simplifying administrative processes can brighten up the employee experience. If your company’s administrative system is often difficult to understand or work through, that can lead to a lot of frustrations among employees. After all, they would rather expend the necessary energy and effort on actually doing their jobs and not trying to figure out the company’s outdated system to request days off or fill out tons of paperwork.

To make the administrative process more pleasant for everyone involved, send out a survey to employees and ask for their feedback on what they think can be improved. Maybe they want better communication between them and HR, or an easier way to request sick days. Whatever the case may be, it’s worth looking into if it will improve employees’ experiences.

4. Conduct exit interviews.

At first glance, this may sound like “too little, too late” when the employee is already on their way out the door — but the information you glean from exit interviews can definitely be useful for future reference. Take the time to hear out the departing employee — why they’re leaving, what they think the company could have done better during their time there, and even what might have made them stay if the company had acted earlier to improve things. This information can help you figure out where the company went wrong in the past and what can be done to improve moving forward.

5. Offer positive feedback and praise.

Employees want to feel appreciated and recognized for their hard work, especially if they’ve been putting in a lot of effort but haven’t been acknowledged yet. Just as managers want their employees to be engaged and take initiative, managers should also make a conscious effort to engage with their workers and show that they care about them.

Ensuring a positive employee experience at your company may not be an easy feat at first, as it requires thoughtful reflection on what needs to be done to achieve real, tangible improvements. However, if the appropriate measures are taken, you and your company will be able to bring employees to a place of professional and personal satisfaction in the workplace.
