Tom Segura's No Teeth No Entry Tour Sells Out Ruby Diamond
Tom Segura made an appearance at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall tonight as part of a series of visiting comedians co-presented by Opening Nights Performing Arts and Union Productions. His “No Teeth No Entry” tour featured opener Carlos Valencia.
With two specials (2016 Mostly Stories and 2014 Completely Normal) currently streaming on Netflix, Segura attracted quite the crowd on a Monday night in Tallahassee, and boy did he not disappoint.
Valencia opened up the night’s event with a bold and brash sense of humor. He set the line straight, urging the audience that they should not be there if they are easily offended, almost defining his sense of humor and the humor that was to come. According to his site, Valencia has been described as: “a comedy insurgent intent on subverting PC oversensitivities and exposing cultural hypocrisies with an arsenal of unapologetic observations and laugh-out-loud irreverence”. That’s exactly what he brought to the table, drawing in his audience with relatable jokes about the South, its culture, and spicing it up with his own personality through interjections about hilarious intimate details.
Following Valencia’s act was the one and only Segura himself. Segura instantly won the audience’s favor, walking out with a garnet Florida State baseball cap and promptly bringing Jimbo Fisher and Dalvin Cook into the conversation, expressing that he himself is a Florida State fan as well. Prior to his arrival, he even posted a clip on Instagram of him doing the Tomahawk chop.
Similar to many current comedians in the media, he then segued into recent political conversations, however it was brief, light-hearted, and relatively impartial – with no intention of political charge.
Segura’s humor relied heavily on relatability – sharing with the audience many personal stories about amusing experiences with his doctor, his wife, previous occupations, parking garages, and so on. All of these topics and more were topics that most, if not all, of his audience could relate to at least some extent. Segura drew in a diverse audience, ranging from college students to senior citizens and he successfully catered to those and all in between: reminiscing on old college tales but also expressing his rather aged personality. This emphasis on time drew the entire night together as a driving theme to his act.
All things considered, how does Segura differ from other comedians of today? With modern humor depending on relatability with its audience, Segura was able to differentiate himself from most other comedians, which is truly difficult to do. While some of his topics were common topics for standup comedy acts, he would take a different stance or turn on them. There were a couple of instances where Segura would bring up a topic that he admits other comedians would often talk about in recent times, however would disagree and provide his own comedic spin on it.
Segura posts a concluding statement for the night on his Instagram profile:
“A dream come true to do a sold out show at #FSU for Opening Nights. I slipped under Coach Bowden’s radar 20 years ago but I finally got to step on campus today and couldn’t have asked for a better staff or crowd. Oh, and they paid me, which is great. Thank you, Tallahassee”.
Opening Nights’ comedy series concludes tomorrow night with Marc Maron – a veteran stand-up comic, however the season itself is far from over. Upcoming events include the Spring PRISM concert, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast co-sponsored by the FSU School of Theatre, Vocalosity, Lang Lang, and more.
