Why You Should Switch From Coffee to Tea This Summer

By Katherine Gardner on June 10, 2016

It’s no secret that coffee and college students go hand in hand. A trip to the library is incomplete if a Starbucks cup isn’t accompanying you at the table. At the height of my own coffee addiction, I was consuming multiple grande Iced Caramel Macchiatos a day, usually with two additional shots of espresso because who can really have enough espresso? Walking into Starbucks each morning and being greeted by the smell of fresh brewed coffee, knowing that I would soon have a cup of Joe in my hand was something that I looked forward to everyday. But as much as I loved my multiple cups of coffee a day, I couldn’t help but notice a few of the downsides to this beautiful beverage: yellowing teeth, dehydration, caffeine crashes, and a dwindling bank account to name a few.

In response to these sparse but undeniable pitfalls of coffee, I decided to try out a more refreshing beverage this summer… TEA! After numerous attempts from my Earl Grey loving mother to get me to make the switch, I have finally given in and decided to give tea a try. Here are some of the many benefits of drinking tea this summer:

Tea is substantially cheaper than coffee

Every person’s coffee order is different and unique. Depending on personal preference and knowledge of the different kinds of coffee available, a person could easily spend six or seven dollars on one single cup of coffee. Due to my own obsession with seeing how many extra shots of espresso I can add into every cup of coffee I purchase, my daily Starbucks cost was beginning to skyrocket. I wasn’t exactly thrilled about this new expense. After making the switch to tea, I was astonished by how much cheaper my Starbucks receipts had become. A venti Iced Green Tea at Starbucks is a miniscule $2.65 compared to a venti Caramel Macchiato, which is more than double the amount at $4.75 (not including any extra shots of espresso that would inevitably be added to my drink).

Tea is more refreshing than coffee

After walking through campus in the suffocating Tallahassee heat, a cup of hot tea or hot coffee is immediately off the table for me. Any hot beverage is unacceptable in these conditions unless AC will, with complete certainty, be present during the entire consumption of said drink. Although iced coffee can be a cool and refreshing summer beverage, because cream and sugar are usually added to make it more tasteful I don’t find iced coffee very refreshing. Drinking iced tea on a hot summer day, however, is like drinking a crisp and hydrating beautifully flavored glass of water. And what’s even better about iced tea is that the flavors are endless! If you’ve ever passed by the tea section in any grocery store you know there is no end to the different teas available.

Tea boosts your metabolism and is great for your overall health

Studies show that drinking green tea on a regular basis is known to boost your metabolism. What more could you ask for during the summer semester than a faster metabolism and a refreshing drink? Not much. Tea is also full of beneficial antioxidants, which help to detoxify your body. According to WebMD, “regular tea drinkers, people who drink two cups or more a day, have less heart disease and stroke, lower total and LDL cholesterol, and recover from heart attacks faster.”

This is just a small list of the many benefits that drinking tea regularly helps with. Once you get hooked on tea, which I’m sure you will, your beverage horizons will widen, your health will improve, and you will soon have ten different flavors of tea stocked up in your pantry and coffee tea mugs galore. Coming from a girl who was once in a monogamous relationship with espresso, I strongly encourage you to consider making the switch this summer, or at least incorporate a little more tea into your life!
